The Essential Dalai Lama
(Edited by Rajiv Mehrotra)

Publicidade
In this work, derived from public appearances of the Dalai Lama and edited by Rajiv Mehrotra, the Dalai Lama talks about all of the important aspects of Buddhism. The Dalai Lama begins with how Human beings can work to better themselves and everything around them with compassion and the universal responsibilities of all people. He then goes on to talk about how Buddhism intertwines with how we live our lives, and how we can become more successful with the aid of the philosophies and practices of Buddhism. The Dalai Lama does a wonderful and very in depth job at parting his knowledge onto the reader?making what he says easy to read, and easy to digest, but still giving the reader much to think about.

The next part of The Essential Dalai Lama, contains actual techniques in practices; including creating perspective, the three jewels, meditation?a very good approach for beginners?and relying on a spiritual teacher. Meditation certainly takes up the most of what the Dalai Lama has to say in the third part of his book.

The fourth and final part of the Essential Dalai Lama?entitled A World in Harmony?contains many other things that make Buddhism the much respected religion it is in today?s world. The Dalai Lama compares science and spirituality, his perspective on Jesus Christ, and calls for harmony amongst all of the religions of the world.

All in all, the Dalai Lama paints a very straight forward picture of what it means to be a Buddhist, how to go about being a Buddhist, and the potential pay-offs of following a Buddhists? lifestyle. Even if you?re not interested in becoming a Buddhist, reading this book will not only give you a very good understanding of Buddhism, but will give you many positive suggestions on how to live within your own religion. In the 260 pages that make up The Essential Dalai Lama, may be some of the best work ever written for the layman, as far as a Buddhist text goes. The Dalai Lama warns in the text that he has no answers or easy crossings to having a pain free life. He clearly states that people often come to him expecting him to be able to cure their diseases. His honesty is laid throughout The Essential Dalai Lama, and seals inside, the truth that he himself has lived by his entire life.
