The Lightning Thief
(Rick Riordan)

Publicidade
One of the best things about the Harry Potter phenomenon that has been in place for the last few years, besides the imagery and brilliance of J.K. Rowling's writing. Is that it is cool now to write and read young adult fiction. The quality of the writing has increased with the number of titles available as well.

It is with great plasure that I recommend "The Lightning Thief" by long time mystery novelist, Rick Riordan. This is the first volume of a series subtitled, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Mr. Riordan has created a full bodied story full of twists and surprises. But the greatest treasure found in this book is the teaching that is happening within the framework of the story, without the reader even being aware. The history lesson doesn't get in the way of a very fast paced and exciting story.

Mr. Riordan gives life to the mythology of ancient Greece. He brings it alive in our time and place, with poor Percy (Perseus) discovering not only that the Gods are real, but that he is the son of one of them. With the help of another demi-god, (half human/half god) Annabeth, and a well meaning bumbling satyr, Percy's adventure to find a stolen piece of Zeus' property and possibly save the world, makes for fun and interesting reading.

Mr. Riordan's work is as imaginative and fun as the best of Rowling. Somthing that makes you smile with the sheer cleverness of the ideas shared. This is one to read for yourself, as well as the kids.
