Her name was Gayatri. Bubbly, cheerful, independent, caring, loving! My childhood friend. Eldest amongst 2 sisters, she was working for a multinational company earning quite good. She was the darling of her parents and respected them a lot. For her younger sisters, Malati and Vaidehi, she was always the pillar of strength. Her world was her family!

All was going on smoothly till John entered her life. A trainee under her, he was the tall, dark, handsome guy whom every girl dreamt of. Fireworks sparked. First it was just admiration, the friendship, then love. Soon they decided to get married.

Coming from traditional family, Gayatri?s parents could not accept the relation and hence gave their dis-approval. But so insane was she in his love that she took the drastic step of running away from home to marry the one she loved. For his sake, she sacrificed her family with whom she was bonded for 25 years, for a man whom she knew for just 25 weeks. Such was the importance of John in her life that his love was beyond the love of her dear ones for whom she once lived for! She gave up her religion and converted for his sake. She gave everything that she could to make the marriage work out. But she failed. Within a year, she came back to her parents who she had abandoned earlier. Her family, though reluctant initially, had to accept their own blood with hugging arms.

Initially, she refused to even come out of the house with the fear of being ridiculed by the society. Her family had to go through hell answering the questions raised by our so-called society who are more interested in what is going on in their next house. Because of her folly, her sisters are yet to get married. Vaidehi did get a good proposal from Madras. But the alliance could not move further as soon as the boy?s family realized what Gayatri had done. [Yes, we do have such narrow minded people]

Today, Gayatri feels that she should have given the relation some time and then jumped for a marriage. What she felt for the boy was not love, but just an infatuation! After going through some counseling, today, Gayatri has started working for a Bank. But somehow, she is bitter towards life. Somehow, I am yet to find the bubbly, caring and cheerful Gayatri whom I knew! I have lost her somewhere. It may take time for me to locate her.

Do not rush into a marriage only because you love the person. Many a times, you do get attracted to the person with whom you spend time with and accept the attraction as love. But it may or may not be love. Give it some time. Think over it. And then go for it. Many a times, the person whom you love before marriage turns out to be quite different in nature after marriage when you stay with him under one roof. Hence read the book of love only when you know how to read it. After all, it is you and only you who have to pay a price for it. And somewhere or the other, the shadow of your folly falls on the people you love, your family and dear ones.
