Romeo And Juliet
(Shakespeare)

Publicidade
Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story.

The play starts in Act I with a street fight in Verona between the Montague and Capulet families. The two families have a long-standing feud and are told off by the Prince of Verona. Romeo is lovesick for Rosaline, who does not love him. His friend, Benvolio, asks him to forget Rosaline by crashing a party. The party is held by the Capulet family but Benvolio and Romeo go wearing masks so that they will not be recognised. At the party, Romeo and Juliet meet each other and fall in love.

In Act II, Romeo climbs the wall and stands in the garden beneath Juliet's balcony. Juliet goes to the balcony and Romeo and Juliet declare their love for each other. Friar Lawrence is asked to marry Romeo and Juliet. He admonishes Romeo for forgetting Rosaline so soon but decides to marry Romeo and Juliet, hoping that the marriage will end the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets.

In Act III, Romeo and his friends Benvolio and Mercutio meet Tybalt, a Capulet. A fight is started and Tybalt kills Mercutio. Romeo fights and kills Tybalt in revenge for Mercutio. The Prince of Verona sentences Romeo to banishment from Verona: he is banished to Mantua. Meanwhile, Juliet's father arranges for Juliet to marry Paris, a noble suitor.

In Act IV, Juliet seeks help from Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence gives Juliet a potion that would allow her to fake death for a few hours. She is to take it on the night before the wedding to Paris, and the next day Romeo would arrive secretly from Mantua to take Juliet from the burial chamber back with him to Mantua. Friar Lawrence sends off a letter to Romeo informing him of this plan. Juliet takes the death potion as planned and the Capulet family holds a funeral.

In Act V, Romeo in Mantua learns of Juliet's death and decides to commit suicide next to her in the burial chamber. Friar Lawrence learns that his letter did not reach Romeo and rushes off to the burial chamber. He is too late. Romeo has bought a poison from the Apothecary. Upon seeing Juliet dead, Romeo kissed Juliet, took the poison, and lay dead next to her. Juliet, meanwhile, has woken up, and seeing Romeo dead next to her, she plunges a knife into her own heart and lies dead next to him. The lovers are united in death. When this tragic love story is discovered, the Montagues and Capulets finally end their feud.

The moral of the story is love conquers all.
