Shmuel Yusef Agnon was born in Buczacz Galicia (1881-1970) The village he was born in was described in one of his novels 'In the heart of the seas' He became one of the most well known Hebrew writers in the world and was the first Hebrew writer awarded The Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966.
His works are published in English under the english name of S.Y.Agnon. His works mainly deal with the conflict between the traditional Jewish life and Language and of the Modern world.
Young Shmuel did not have a school education and never attended school. His parents taught him at home. When he reached eight he began to write Hebrew and Yiddish and read intensively into the writers of the Jewish enlightenment.
One of his many books called Betrothed Protrays a Teacher whose love for the sea leads him to the Town of Jaffa, to where he was pursued by many.
