Publicidade
Abstract: In today?s high stress, high-tech and highly competitive environment coupled with uncertainty of job, a difficult-to-handle boss will adversely affect the morale and productivity of a workforce. Fast growing population of knowledge workers and trend of outsourcing of services necessitate that the bosses have to pay more attention to employee needs, conflict resolution, guiding, and awarding the achievers. At the same time, new employees must fast learn to adapt themselves to the environment instead of finding fault with the boss and ganging up against her/him. It is easy to create a bad impression and very difficult to erase it from the mind of your boss. The author has carried out exhaustive survey of diverse organizations and interviewed number of employees to analyze various issues related to employer-employee relationships and has provided a pragmatic approach for employee to withstand bad bosses. The first principle is to understand the dynamics of a situation and apply common sense approach to mitigate the friction. This experience will be handy when employee becomes a boss in his/her own turn. It is highlighted that at times, there is difference in perception of objective and level of competence leading to misunderstanding between the employee and the boss. Right approach is to have a personal meeting and resolve the issues failing which , the employee should avoid confrontation and work around to maintain discipline in the team. You may stand up when you are right and even ask for hard bargain but it always leaves a bitter impression in the mind of boss. The author depicts a situation when the boss is a perfectionist, hard- task- master, setting up unachievable targets and expects ever body to be workaholic. In such a scenario, you have to pull up your socks and put in your very best and thereafter, you may tactfully approach the higher up to intervene and advise the boss to adopt more pragmatic approach. It is brilliantly brought out that there is no dry and cut solution to patch up differences between boss and the employees. The boss may be some combination of power player, technocrat lacking managerial skills, less competent ,workaholic, biased, racial, abusive and insulting .The employee has to be perfect in his/her job and adjust in the work group before finding fault with the boss. Any experience is valuable for professional growth and therefore while dealing with a bad boss, one should see the brighter side of life as well. Once you understand the group dynamics and align yourself with organizational goals, your common sense, past experience and guidance from others will show the path of reconciliation with a difficult boss.
