'Resurrection Men' is Ian Rankin's finely crafted crime thriller, set in the grainy streets of the underworld of Scotland's capital, and second cities. The main character, a policeman by the name of DCI John Rebus, finds himself in the opening chapter being placed on disciplinary charges following yet another outburst at a senior officer.
Rebus' punishment is to be sent to the Scottish Police College for 'correctional training' along with a number of other, equally unruly, renegade policemen. Under the supervision of a retired senior detective, this unsalubrious band of brothers are given the task of re-investigating the murder of a prominent member of the Glasgow underworld.
But all is not what it seems.
As the expertly sewn plot line unravels, it transpires that Rebus has engineered his fall from grace at the behest of none other than the Chief Constable. There are strong rumours that some, or all of the police officers undergoing this correctional training are corrupt, and that they are planning a raid on a consignment of confiscated drugs of the most audacious magnitude.
In order to gain admission into the secretive, and shadowy world within which his colleagues are entering, Rebus poses as someone who could also be interested in such a venture.
During Rebus' efforts to uncover which, if any of his new compatriots are sizing up the confiscated haul, the course of Rebus' investigations cross paths with DS Siobhan Clarke, his long time sidekick, who was forced to carry on with Rebus' case work following his disciplinary punishment. As their investigative paths cross, it soon transpires that Rebus himself is not exactly whiter than white.
Whilst on the hunt for the corruption that lurks within, DCI Rebus treads at times during this addictive thriller, a dangerous path that threatens his friends, his property, his job, and in a shocking and compulsively page turning climax, his life.
Written in a fashion that permits the reader to visualise every minute detail that surrounds the characters, down to the nicotine stains on the ceilings of back street crime lords, Resurrection Men is a true lesson to anyone in how to grip, and addict the reader from the first page to the very last.
