What do you do with five daughters and no money? You marry them off to the highest bidder.
This is the story of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The book tells the story of the Bennett household: a household which contains six women and one very patient father.
Due to the fact that inheritance of property passes only to male persons, when their father dies, the young Ms. Bennetts will be left without a home. This unfortunate situation prompts their mother to go on a ruthless search for rich husbands for all her daughters. Young Elizabeth Bennett, however, will not be won over by money alone. She values the character and charm of a man, believing herself to be a good judge of both of these things. When handsome and rich, but also proud, Mr. Darcy comes along, Elizabeth immediately writes him off as an arrogant snob. His actions and other's rumors confirm these things to her. Circumstances continue to throw these two strong-willed people together, but nothing can sway Ms. Bennett's poor opinion of Mr. Darcy. Yet, is her prejudice against him warranted? Will his pride win over his growing affection for her?
In what is probably her finest work, Austin crafts a brilliant study of characters that few other authors can match. Elizabeth is a woman who can hold her own. From the beginning of the book, one recognizes that this is a woman who is confident of herself and with her opinions of others. She is, however, not perfect. A gossip and flirt with a stubborn streak, Elizabeth is treated in a way that never allows you to take her too seriously.
While Elizabeth's character is evident from the beginning of the book, Mr. Darcy's is revealed more slowly. One goes from hating this man, to feeling sorry for him, to intense admiration.
Pride and Prejudice is a classic that should be in every person's library. It offers intelligent humor, an engrossing plot, along with a timeless romance. With amusing repartee and biting wit, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy relationship progresses to an ever suspenseful end.
