Hamlet
(WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE)

Publicidade
HAMLETHamlet, the king of Denmark, has only been dead two months when Claudius, his brother, marries Gertrude the widowed Queen. Rumour has it that Claudius murdered the King and by so doing has succeeded to the throne, instead of young prince Hamlet. This rumour throws the prince into a melancholy disposition. Soldier declare that whilst on the watch on the battlements the ghost of the late king has been seen. Hamlet, wishing to verify these statements, watches with the soldiers. The ghots appears and tells him that whilst sleeping in his orchard his brother poured poison into his ear. He makes his son promise to avenge his death, but not to kill or injure his mother but leave her to be punished by heaven and her conscience. From this time forward Hamlet is either mad or ?seeming mad?. The Court think he is suffering from some unrecruited love. Before all this happened Hamlet had shown an attachment to Ophelia, the daughter of Polonious the King?s chief minister. Now, however, he begins to act strangely towards her in order perhaps to give verisimilitude to his madness. He determines that some travelling players shall have a play written for them to perform in which there is a scene similar to the murder of his father. The King, his uncle, attends the play, and when the poisoning is enacted rushes away feigning illness. Hamlet is now convinced of the truth of the ghost?s story. Gertrude, the Queen, at the prompting of her husband, sends for Hamlet to tell him his conduct is displeasing to them both. Polonious listens behind the arras. Hamlet believing it to be his murderous uncle, but pretending he thought it was a rat, plunges his sword through the tapestry and kills Polonius. This gives Claudius an excuse for banishing Hamlet, sending him to the English Court with a sealed letter asking that he should be put to death. He however escapes and eventually returns to Denmark just as Ophelia, who had lost her reason and drowned herself, is being buried. He watches the funeral not knowing at first whose it is. Laertes, Ophelia?s brother distraught with grief leaps into the grave and Hamlet not recognizing him does the same. One day the King persuades Laertes to challenge Hamlet a trial of skills in fencing. At Claudius?s instigation Laertes foil is poisoned. During the trial Hamlet is mortally wounded, the foils fall,, get exchanged, and Laertes is also mortally wounded. The King has prepared a poisoned cup for Hamlet to drink. The Queen in the excitement of the moment picks it up, drinks and dies. Laertes, before he dies, confesses the treachery and Hamlet slays the King. By doing so he fulfils the ghost?s bequest and as he dies he begs his friend Horatio to tell his story. ?The rest is silence?.
