Desdemona is the beautiful daughter of Brabantio, a Venetian Senator. Her hand has been sought by many noble suitor. But she has accepted none of them. Othello, a noble Moor, General in the Venetian Service, has won her heart and they have been secretly married. All this time the Venetians are perturbed because the Turks are threatening Cuprus which belongs to Venice and Othello is required to take charge of its defence. He is summoned before the Duke to answer a charge brought by Brabantio of exercising unlawful over Desdemona. Othello confesses that he loves Desdemona and she admits that he is her husband. The matter being settled Othello sets off for Cyprus leaving, under the charge of Cassio, to follow him. Iago, Othello?s ensign, is very jealous at Cassio?s selection for this duty. Desdemona?s ship arrives before Othello?s but when her husband comes a great festival is held in his honour. That night Cassio has charge of the guard and is told to keep them from excessive drinking. Iago, being madly jealous, seizes this opportunity to persuade Cassio to drink. In his cups Cassio praises Desdemona, saying that she has ?an inviting eye?. A quarrel is arranged and the disturbance causes the alarm bell to be rung. Othello demands the meaning of the disturbance and on hearing the story he says to Cassio ? ?Cassio, I love thee; but never more be officer of mine.?At the intigation of Iago, Cassio goes to Desdemona and begs her to speak for him but the interview is cut short on hearing the approach of Othello and Iago, Cassio hurries away. Iago puts suspicion and jaelousy into Othello?s mind. Desdemona pleads for Cassio. Iago first advices Othello to watch cassio and Desdemona and then steals one of Desdemona?d handkerchiefs and drops it for Cassio to pick up. Iago tells Othello that Desdemona has given it to Cassio. Othello now mad with jealousy in enraged with his wife. She ask Iago?s advice. He tells her ?tis but his humour?.Othello?s goes to Desdemona?s bedroom, asks her if she has prayed. After a poignant scene he murders her.When Othello tells the reason of his act and the incident of the handkerchief Emilia, Iago?s wife, explains that her husband had stolen it. In rage at being found out Iago stabs his wife. Other proofs of Cassio?s innocence follow. Cassio has escaped death. ]Othello?s remorse is so great he stabs himself and falls on Desdemona?s lifeless body.
