(Gabriel García Márquez)

Publicidade
In the first chapter of "Chronicles of a Foretold death" we a young man named Santiago Nasar, the main character of this novel, he awakes in the morning, goes out to the port to wave to the bishop and the he dies. And that is what the story is about; in the next chapters the story develops from several points of view, adding new infromation, until the reader understands every detail, and in the end we will see the young man die and that way close the tal. But still knowing this we will not finish to understand the title of the story, because there are other elements that will pick up the story and make it more interesting that what it seems. Because the death of Santiago Nassar will be a muder and it will be a rare murder, a foretold murder, where two good friends of this man, brothers, will be the killers and they will take this task after finding out that Santiago Nassar took away his sister´s virginity. But as the story moves forward the plot complicates. We find out of such things as that apparently it was not Santiago Nasar who took the Vicario´s sister virginity. And in the bottom, the future killers know, adding the fact that he is a friend and they, through their actions show that they don´t really want to kill him. However, this novel, speaks of a past time, where the family honor was a far more important thing than it is now, and the Vicario brothers were, one could say, obligated to fulfill their word. It´s that way that in a moment we can find ourselves facing the unbelievable scene of Santiago Nasar walking down the street, with the mind busy in unimportant things, while hundreds of people that cross his path look at him worried, even anxious, whispering with the person next to them. And the young man remains ignorant of his faith, when almost the entire town knows before it happens, of the foretold death. The Vicario brothers will go to the store and tell it openly to the owner, one of the only people that could have stoped the murder (although she helps in several ways), and a misterious letter, that no one will read until after the homicide, will arrive to Santiago Nasar´s house anouncing the young man that his time is over. And among delusions and interwined stories (Like the one that tales the love story between the Vicario´s sister and Bayardo San Román) the reader will discover little by littel the true intentions of the killers and see horrified how this people stands motionless while they know what is about to happen.
