The Stranger
(ALBERT CAMUS)

Publicidade
The Stranger-by Albert Camus./Abstract by David Ram.
ALBERT CAMUS lives,breaths and shines.

Nowadays,by many people,Albert Camus is rated as passe, outdated.I dispute that statement. I am convinced that such an approach is absolutely mistaken.Albert Camus, like the great, quality philosophers and novelists, will stay as an everlasting thinker.I choosed purposely -The Stranger/The Foreigner- because this outstanding, maybe unique, creation, represents the core, the main conception,of Camus,as an existentialist, and his approach to absurd. In an English version,I've found the title-The Outsider- for that very book.Meursault, the unperceivable hero,by his weird demeanor, his apathy towards his mother, his girlfriend, his frivolity joining/supporting a neighboring pimp, shooting to death an unknown man without any plausible reason, adding a fourth bullet to a corpse laying down,is definitely a kind of an outsider. But no doubt, the appropriate title fitting Camus conception is Stranger/Foreigner,matcing the original French L'etranger. The point it's obviuos.Man,meaning, mankind,is a Foreigner/Stranger in the Universe. Not only due to his uncommon, unmatched, possibilities in nature, like speaking, or his ability to create, invent and change the most unbelieveable innovations, not always positive, sometime destructive, but by his unceasing struggle in spite of the absurdity of his existence. What is that absurd?Starting with Homo Sapiens (the intelligent man) to our very days, man is supposed to be,to act reasonable. The Universe is not reasonable. So here occurs the Big Clash.Universe doesn't care for nothing.Man is always alert and do cares about everything. It will never be any compromise between Man and Universe. That is the main message of The Stranger/The foreigner. From that initial position Camus will write most of his philosophy and writings,as The myth of Sisyphus,Rebelious Man and so on. Meursault, the hero of the absurd story, says time and again when asked by his girlfriend:-"Do you love me?"- he answers :-"I think no.But it hasn't any meaning"- When asked at the trial- "Why did you killed the man?" his answer was :-"Maybe on behalf of the sun." So,if life has no meaning then death has no meaning also. For Meursault, deeds, facts, come before meaning. That is basic existentialism.
