Occasionally a story comes along that stirs emotions within a reader to such a great extent that they are unable to disassociate themselves from the feelings of the main character in the book. When engaging in such a story, the reader becomes flooded with a plethora of emotions. Many of these emotions felt for the first time and the shock and anxiety they create may result in the reader contemplating the viability of survival in such a situation. Anger, sadness and disgust may be felt over the way people are able to treat life, especially when some people are able to treat others as if they were no more than a piece of trash.

A Child Called It is a heartfelt and inspirational story. Dave Pelzer is not only the author of the story but he is also the main character of the story. He wrote this book about his childhood and the relentless and brutal abuse he endured. His message was ment to inspire and support other children of abuse.

This story is written in the first person from the point of view of Dave as a child. He writes a richly textured and detailed account of what his life was like as a child growing up in a not so perfect home. He mentions the neglect he endured and the extreme abuse he received at the hands of his mother. Dave describes the struggles he faced while attempting to find food to eat, clothes to wear and trying to keep warm while sleeping in the damp basement.

The novel concludes with a write up about the Perspectives on Child Abuse from a variety of different sources; him as a survivor, a teacher, a social worker and the former Executive Director of the California Consortium of the Prevention of Child Abuse. He also includes a section on Resources for Help as well as Keynotes on Seminars, Workshops and School Assemblies.

This story brings child abuse into an entirely new light. The reality of what millions of children face everyday are magnified in this story as it is told from the perspective of an abused child who survived to be a fighting and helping adult.
