At fifteen years of age Josh Jones is on the brink of manhood. At this age there is a lot of changes coming his way and a lot of decisions for him to make.
Josh lives with his Aunt Lou and preacher uncle Nat as his parents had died when he was very young. Josh gets along fine with his aunt and uncle. He lives with them mostly in town where he attends school but on the weekends he goes out to the farm with his grandfather and great grandfather. There?s nothing better he likes to than go fishing with his grandfather.
He also loves camping with his three solid friends, Jack, Willie and Avery.
Then one day Josh?s ordered life is all upset. A new teacher comes to town, and brings with him his wife and pretty daughter, Camellia. For some reason the new teacher likes Josh, he tells the boy he has a good mind and shouldn?t waste it. He asks Josh to tutor his daughter in geometry. Josh readily agrees as he was smitten by Camellia the first day of school. So were the other boys on Josh?s friendship group. Especially Jack. Friction grows between Josh and Jack. They have a real bad disagreement one dark snowy, winter evening and Jack almost kills his one time best friend.
Josh quickly finds out that Camellia does not need instruction in geometry. Her father had just invented this lie to get the two of them together. He wanted Josh to have access to his books on evolution and for his daughter to teach him the right facts about how the world began. Being raised in Christian values, Josh had been taught that the world was created by God and not through a big bang. He does not allow the teacher to cloud his upbringing. He isn?t surprised when he finds out the reason the teacher had been fired from his other school was because of teaching evolution. In the end Josh drops Camellia as a future prospect for a wife. Although Camellia and her father does succeed in mixing up Josh in his way of thinking for a season, in the end he holds true to what his Uncle Nat has taught him and decides this is more important to him than Camellia, no matter how beautiful she is.
