Colonia
(Juan Martini)
An unsettling novel about a bizarre group of characters. While some are there voluntarily, many have no recollection of why they inhabit an institution and can´t make out whether it is a mental hospital, a hospice or some demented hotel. Nothing is what it seems at first sight. The story takes place in the quiet and beautiful town of Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay; and if anyone, as myself, has had the fortune of visiting this place more than once, they will know that behind this aparently ideal town there is an Institution clustered behind one of those ancient walls. It is a book that you will surely finish in one sitting. The language is sober, as if written by a chess-player. There is not a single word missing and none that could be changed.
