Mark Haddon's story of 15-year old Christopher takes us inside the orderly world of a boy with Asperger's Syndrome. As long as everything is in order and predictable, Christopher feels safe. But the world is unpredictable, and here is where Christopher encounters his deepest misunderstandings. He does not understand or identify with human emotion. Facial expressions are so puzzling that Christopher must draw them on a cheat sheet, with the meaning of each expression written next to it. Christopher's safe world is thrown into disorder when he discovers the neighbour's dog dead on his front lawn. It doesn't make sense.
Christopher's journey begins with his resolution to solve the mystery of who killed the dog. The book is microscopically about this investigation, and macroscopically about the widening of Christopher's experiences, his challenge to himself to step outside that which he knows and the testing of his own abilities. Christopher's father told him that his mother was dead, but when he discovers letters that she has written, boxed and hidden in his father's cupboard, Christopher takes off in search of his mother to understand why she left, why his father might have lied about her death and ultimately how these events lead to the death of the dog.
Astonishingly, Haddon does not himself have Asperger's Syndrome. His acute telling of how Christopher perceives the world will take you inside the mind of those who are supposedly unreachable. Written with much sympathy for Christopher, this book deserves the Whitbread Award that it received in 2005.
