The Namesake
(Jhumpa lahiri)

Publicidade
The book namesake is aptly given by Jhumpa lahiri. As I am from a Bengali family it is easier to follow the book. The emotional turmoil is well portrayed. As a kid every child does not understand the norms followed by our parents. This emotion will become stronger when one is born in another country. Gogol had to follow the expectation put by his parents as well as his peers. The quiet yet the charming relationship between father and son are well depicted. The part when he grows up is given in very carefully. Also the norms of Bengali culture are given perfectly and in detail. The part where he keeps away the book presented by his father shows his inclination towards American culture. His anguish towards his name is shown in excellent way. It shows the tribulations the second generation citizens go through.
The story took new turn when his father revealed the real purpose of his name being Gogol. He understood the trauma his father went through .he got how his name meant much his name is respected and loved.
The relationship between Gogol and the girls shows his the three stages of conflict in his life. His first relationship with Ruth showed his need to be in a relationship where he can share his agony. It also shows his physical exploration with a woman. His second relationship shows how he wants to get away from all the responsibility. He wants a whole new identity as Nikhil .Then with Moushumi he expects his marriage to go perfectly. He has his parents consent and the fact she too was an ABCD made him feel nothing will go wrong. But when that did not work out him along with is Ashima is broken.
Ashimas sadness to leave the country is well reflected .we can understand the situation and identify. She had changed her in this country and the values she learnt were now embedded in her. Gogol continuation with life makes a reader very sad. His love towards his parents, sister and the woman he loved most was passing by him very fast. The story ends in a brilliant way where Gogol reads about Gogol.
