Total Blindness
(Saramago)

Publicidade
Sitting at the steering wheel of his car, a man has stopped at a red light. Suddenly he is hit by blindness. It seems like a white veil has been suddenly spread out in front of his eyes. Next it is a women's turn at the moment that she is making love, next it is another man's turn etc.... A true blindness epidemic spreads slowly around the city. The authorities react by quarentining all these new blind people in an old psychiatric hospital. Such is the biggining of a book by Saramago in which the reader discovers all the consequences of this epidemic of the social life and the phases of human degradation of which these sad people must overcome... Saramago is not disillusioned of the kindness and the leniency of humanity. All means are good to obtain the slightest avantage of food and to sleep with the women. Without sparing us the details, the tale, leads us along a steep course into horror and along a monstuous decent in hell. Next, nothing is working. Filth accumulates everywhere. The epidemic spreads out so, that there is no more army, even less any authority. In a such context, all is possible and most of all a return to original Barabity. A book that make is think, that doesn't leave us indifferent and leaves a trace. It is to avoid if we do not have alot of morality. If we has to prove that man is really a wolf to man, this book suffices amply. It is a shame that the style is a bid "heavy", compact, with the preconception of the author to use neither periods, nor dialogues. Just a big heap of phrases with commas, which is to say is a singularity that brings nothing is particular....
