Little Women

Little Women is a heart-warming family drama, set in the nineteenth century against the backdrop of the American Civil War. It follows the hopes, dreams and aspirations of four sisters and their mysterious, secretive neighbour. With strong moral messages throughout the book, we are guided through the development of a family unit dealing with love, war, jealousy, forgiveness, sickness and joy.
As the story opens we are introduced to the sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, each with their own unique personalities and gripes about war-time conditions. With their father away fighting, it is up to the four girls and their mother to keep the home running efficiently ? with nothing but their sisterly bonds to sustain them. As their curiosity about their crotchety neighbour increases, a new friend is brought into the family fold in the form of their neighbour?s grandson, Laurie - a romantic and headstrong youth who is being tormented with ?studies? by his strict grandfather. He is a passionate musician and the conflict between his ambitions and his grandfather wishes highlights the struggle between youth and age.
As we are exposed to each of the girl?s daily struggles and joys, we are educated on the blessing of sacrifice, the dangers of anger and resentment, the maliciousness of gossip and the redeeming qualities of honesty, innocence and family love. By the end of the story we are able to trace each sister?s development into a young woman ? each overcoming their personal demons and receiving a just reward for their labours in the last few pages.
Written simply and honestly, Little Women is primarily story about family. Although life is lived differently today, what makes the book timeless are the ever-relevant moral messages that each chapter carries. As a family drama, a tale of love and friendship and a portrait of life during the American Civil War, Little Women makes for an enjoyable and sympathetic read.
