This is a bitter- sweet love story . Touching, sometimes trivial, sometimes naive, sometimes reflecting profound thoughts. Two teenagers, 17 year-old Alice and 19 year-old John fall in love with each other. She comes from a rich family, him-not. This is the reason why Alice´s parents do not accept him. To stop this relationship, which is regarded to be totally inappropriate in their eyes, they decide to move. Alice and John become separated for 13 years and live separate lives.
When Alice reaches her thirties she gets engaged. Her husband-to-be can offer her money, safety and support. He is handsome, educated, powerful. Anything a woman can dream of, but... Alice realizes she still loves the first love in her life. Shortly before the wedding day, Alice decides to pay John a visit. The love and the passion extinguished for years explode again. There is no escape from that feeling and no other choice but to cancel the wedding errangements. Finally, these two lovers stay together, get married.
And then the book takes us 50 years forward in time. And that´s the essential point of the whole story. Alice and John have been married for 49 years. They are both very sick and live in a nursery home. Alice suffers from Alzheimer?s disease, her sickness is so far advanced that she can hardly ever recognize people around her. Including her husband. To quote his words, everytime she asks him ?who are you? it kills a piece of him. But John does not stop loving her. He still loves her the same way as the very first day they met He still finds her beautiful.
This book I find very interesting mostly because of the way it ends. While the first part is just a sort of a soap-opera performance, the second one is really touching. What is an asset to this book is that it tells the story which could have been true, could have happened. A real love can happen and we want to believe it.
