in this amazing book vc andrews has followed the sad life of a young girl growing up with a hardship that few can imagine. her desperate poverty that is made bearable by her amazing love for her sibllings. yet the person who she needs love from most of all can't for reasons unknown to her even acknowledge that she exists, her father.her step mother leaves and heaven is left looking after her four brothers and sisters as well as her granda while her father comes with food parcels from time to time. What should have been the happiest and most carefree days of her life when she should have been getting that education she so desired, playing with friends and getting to know her first boyfriend became the saddest and hardest. she lost the chance of finishing her education and her family become her priority until the awful day arrives that she and her siblings are seperated and over night her life is dramatically changed. for now her hungry and cold days are left behind her but so are her siblings. for now she has all the things in life she so craved for yet in return is propelled toward a love which she doesn't.
her mother died in childbirth and in her heart she knows that someday she will leave the new life she was sold into behind in search of her mothers rich family in Boston. in her mind they would accept her with open arms and she would go on to fulfill her dreams of becoming a teacher and eventually go back and put her family back together again in her home town were she bring her family name out of the gutter where she has always known it to be.
This first book in the series is filled with so much sorrow and hardship yet at the same time so much love and hope. when reading this you have this real need to go on and see if this young girls dreams are to be realised or is she destined to have this life of misery that seems to entrap her.
