Psalms
(The Bible)

The Psalmist, in Psalm 44, looks back with nostalgia and talks about the works of deliverance that God did in the lives of His people because of His love for them. It was God, he asserted, who, by the outstretching of His hand and by His great power, planted the people in the land of Canaan, something unheard of in the annals of history. He infers that the people owe God a debt of gratitude, that they cannot boast in their own strength but in the goodness of God.

He goes on to acknowledge the lordship of the Almighty over his own life while he urges God to give victory to His people just as He did in times past considering that the battles are not over yet. He implies that without God, the people have no cover and they would be at the mercy of the enemy. He insinuates that the people are vulnerable and helpless without the backing of heaven and they themselves realise this.

However, as he continues in his pleading with God, it seems he is not particularly happy. He is puzzled as it appears God has forsaken His people humiliating them before the nations. He maintains that the fact that the people have gone through all sorts of privations is not unconnected with the fact that they belong to God. Due to the fact that they belong to God, they are targeted by God's enemies. Nevertheless, as he wonders why things are as they are, he points to the fact that despite these things, the people still believe in and hold on to the only true God. He submits that this is the main reason why God should come to the aid of His people.

The writer seems concludes that since the people are persecuted on account of God, it is only through God that they can find salvation. He therefore seriously intercedes for the people. He states, ' Awake, why do you sleep, O Lord? Arise, do not cast us forever...........'
