Psalms
(The Bible)
Principalities and powers often cast envious looks at her because of her pride of place in the economy of God. Like a woman in labour, she is very much in travail, waiting for the time she would fully fulfill her destiny. Welcome to Jerusalem, the city of the great king. Only a few would dispute the fact that God chooses places as He does individuals or times. We do not know why God chose her but we do know that there is not much anyone can do about the Almighty's decision to choose Zion for His eternal purposes. No other city on our planet has ever had or will ever have the privilege of being described as the city of God as the Psalmist does Jerusalem in Psalm 48. We are also not sure if king David knew he was actually carrying out what had been on God's heart in eternity past when he annexed the place as the capital of his kingdom. We know though that David was a man after God's own heart. This is one of the most beleaguered cities in the history of mankind. Nevertheless, there were times in the past when she herself did not live up to God's expectation leading her to be delivered into the hands of her detractors. However, it is a historical fact that while several of the cities from where some of the most devastating attacks were launched against her have become history, Jerusalem still stands, confirming the faithfulness of God. According to the writer of the Psalm, despite what the city has gone through or is going through, God will comfort her and ' God will still be known in her palaces for a refuge.' Jerusalem is where the anointed of the Lord will call the shots from as he establishes his universal everlasting kingdom. It is from there that the law will go out to the whole world. She would be the centre of gravity, the centre of attention and the centre of delight. No wonder the writer states of her, ' The joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion.......................' It must be noted that whenever her inhabitants had put God first, He had never left the city defenceless. At all such times, her enemies had always been worsted. The Psalmist confirms this, ' For lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together. They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were toubled, and hasted away..........' The writer then enjoins God's people to rejoice in the knowledge that God is faithful and that His purposes for ' The mountain of His holiness' will stand.
