Gerry Adams Before The Dawn
(GERRY ADAMS)
Politics! Well! I have never regarded it as my strong point: afterall I studied Literature at University and qualified in the same field of English Studies: well, again, then, for my generation of women I have been advised to /not put too much stress on my little lady's head/ and leave it to the men. This viewpoint I have endorsed longer than I care to remember! However, certain key factors in my life overthrew these blinding prejudices of the past and I got involved in writing political poems! I know all about John McCarty the ex Beirut Hostage and believe me, I have learnt a lesson from him directly, not that long ago. Well, thus, my dipping into the Political Writings of Mr Gerry Adams the President of Sinn Fein Party in Ireland! They are the United Ireland Party and also the Headship of the Irish Terrorist Movement! Gerry Adams takes us from his childhood in The Falls Road Belfast, - and discusses, his huge family background! For a little while I could imagine I was dealing with my own subject of Literature! However, every now and then, POLITICS and Political Issues are raised! He traces the foundation of his Political Party thru the period of history in Ireland - focusing specifically on his native Belfast, - which came to be known as - THE TROUBLES! His view is that he sees the initiatives of both Governments; that is the British Government and the Irish Government as fundamental to the stability of Political life in the whole Island of Ireland. The famous Hunger Strikes of this turbulent period of Irish History are referred to: These areas of Conflict are widely discussed in this book and are set against the family background - there is a photograph of Gerry Adams as a young boy /in the arms of/ his mother and seated beside Margaret! Very amusing family portrait again of The Author as a Young Boy wearing his favourite fancy dress outfit - juxtaposed with harrowing photographs of the streets in Belfast during this Conflict There is another photograph of Gerry Adams in Long Kesh Prison with other members of his Party! All in all, Politics is a big subject and I have, at last, had the time and inclination to deal with it comprehensively, clearly and cogently! I pray daily for Peace in Ireland and of course in the rest of our World!
