PEOPLE TO BE ADMIRED Some people are born great and some people become great by their hardwork and devotion to duty. Do you know how some people became great? They had qualities, which we have to admire and develop. Let us know these great people. BUDDHA: Siddhartha was the son of Suddhodana, ruller of Kepilavastu. He was brought up with much care and love. But, when he came to know that the world was full of sufferings, he left the palace, his wife and child and went away to the forest to meditate. He wandered from place to place in search of truth. He finally sat under a pipal tree at Bodhgaya and meditated. One fine day, he got enlightenment. From that day he was called buddha or the enlightened one. He founded the religion Buddhism and spread his preachings far and wide. He preached that desire was the main cause for sufferings and so, the people should get rid of desire. He asked the people to follow the eight fold path King Asoka and king Kanishka followed Buddhism.RAJA RAM MOHAN ROY: He was born in a village in Bengal in the year 1772. He went to a village school and learnt Bengali. He also learnt many other languages like Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit. He, later, became a revenue officer in the Indian Government. At that time, his brother died and his brother's wife was burnt to death in the same funeral pyre. This custom was called Sati. Raja Ram wanted to get rid of this practice and worked hard and finally succeeded. Lord William Bentick passed a law this cruel practice in the 1829.SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: Vivekananda was known as Narendra. From his early days, he wanted to help the poor. So he worked hard to uplife the downtrodden. He was good orator and many of his speeches are worth reading. He was a disciple of Paramahamsa. He was a simple man and wore saintly dress. He started the Ramakrishna Mission and started schools, colleges, orphanages and worked sincerely for upliftment of the Hindus. A rock memorial at Kanniyakumari knowns as Vivekananda Rock was set up, where he meditated.SIR C.V.RAMAN: Sir C.V.Raman was born on the 7th November, 1882 in Trichy in Tamilnadu. He was a medalist and obtained his Master's Degree. He loved physics. He went to England, Canada and America. He lectured in the Physics society in London. His experiment the Raman Effect won him a Noble Prize in 1930. It was obout the scattering of light.BHARATHIAR: Subdramania Bharathi was born in Ettayapuram in Tirunelveli district, on the 11th December, 1882. He was very intelligent and composed poems at an early age. Later, he went to live with his aunt after the death of his parents. He learnt Sanskrit and Hindi. He hated caste system. He also worked for freedom of India. Through his songs and poems he aroused a spirit of patriotism to the people. MOTHER TERESA: She was born in 1910 in Albaria. Yet she worked for the people in India, especially the lepers. She nursed the sick and helpless. She was a great social reformer. She got the Nehru award and Bharat Ratna, which is the highest award in India. She also got the Noble Prize in 1979. She died of ill-health on 6th September, 1997.
