As a united but fallen humanity posed a very dangerous threat to the plans and purposes of God, it was hardly surprising that the Almighty decided to do something drastic at Babel. However, one would have thought that human beings with the trauma of the flood behind them would have done everything to prevent their thoughts running riot yet again but not the descendants of Shem, Ham and Japheth.
The people wanted to grow vertically whereas the plan of God for them was to grow horizontally. They wanted to remain in one place and build a city the top of which would reach the heavens but the plan of God for them was to spread abroad all over the earth. The Lord God had to come down Himself to see what was happening. He realised that people were becoming uncontrollably dangerous and that it would be too risky to leave them as they were. God then decided that the only way to stop them was to institute differences among them and what better way to start than to confound their language.
It implies that all the intrinsic differences in humanity that human beings themselves cannot explain like linguistic, racial, cultural and genetic were all introduced to keep a fallen humanity at bay. The Creator opted to divide rather than destroy humanity as he had made a covenant with Noah and his family never to destroy humans again especially with flood water. This probably explains again why as soon as differences occur between groups or individuals, each group or individual reaches out in a different direction from the other whereas if such groups or individuals had remained united, the tendency would be for them to reach up.
There is no doubt that the differences among human beings keep them busy as they use a greater part of their energy in the process of one group trying to outdo the other or as one group tries to protect itself from the other.
