This book is a report written by a Shanghai scholar on his social investigation along the Yellow River, revealing in him the great painfulness and deep love for its motherland-China.The whole piece consists of two parts, offering a detailed record of a diary-like social investigation made from May to November,1996. This piece is touching in the author's precise attitude towards the investigation, the practical investigation methods including going down to the grass roots and field survey, and the objective standpoint with calm and rational mind.The author is to open out the investigation process before readers altogether with his flashing comments between times throught out the book.His analysis of sme problems often brings pleasure of receiving wisdom like pouring rich liquor over one's head to the readers. For example, one of them is concerned with the statement of 'Pioneers towards being rich' ,which is analysed from the angle of its premise that Chinese countrymen are in need of a representative for themselves, which is indeed a deep insight into many phenomena of 'developed villages and rich villagers' in the Chinese countryside.Moreover, this report can be regarded as a novel as well for it does show its emotional concerns over the countryside, and people with high responsibility for Chinese countrymen will be in favor of it. Also, it is of practical significance for the officials working in the countryside. This piece worths reading in that it has, to a certain extent, scientific and exploratory value in its all-sided content and the reflection on the status quo among the contemporary rural area all over China through the investigator's field experience.
