Psalms
(The Bible)

Publicidade
The alarm raised here by the writer of Psalm 12 is unmistakable. To him it is becoming disturbingly evident that good people are fast becoming a vanishing tribe. He considers it to be a cause for great cocern, what with each generation becoming worse than the previous one especially when it comes to the things that the Almighty is on the look out for, things like mercy, justice, equity, compassion, selflessness, generousity, contrition, empathy and humility. These are attributes that are going out of fashion.

An exasperated Psalmist specifically mentions deception as occasioned by the use of the tongue. Although one of the smallest parts of the body, the tongue seems to be so potent. He is aware that the world has become a place where a person's tongue and heart are no longer traditional allies and that the tongue has become a mere tool to conceal the intentions of the heart. This simply means that what you see is no longer what you get. The writer apparently fears that with more people becoming such split personalities, it will not really be surprising if rough times lie ahead.

The Psalmist, not surprisingly, then pronounces judgement on the tongue for having been wrongly deployed for so long. Invariably, the implication is that judgement against the tongue means judgement against the owner of the tongue. The tongue, for instance, has been so abused that it is now being used to deny the overlordship of God. Frighteningly, this continues as people believe they can talk themselves into Utopia.

Finally, due to the fact that the poor and the needy have always been on the receiving end of most of the damages done by the human tongue over time, God resolves, on the authority of his Word, to rise to their defence.
