Manchild In A Promised Land
(Claude Brown)
Claude Brown's book about the realities of growing up in Harlem in the 1940's and 1950's is one of the best books I have ever read. Not only is it a book you will not want to put down, but you will truly sympathize with the plight of a young boy struggling to survive in what had to have been one of the roughest neighborhoods in the country.Claude outlines in his story the obstacles that stand in his way of having a normal upbringing and becoming successful. From the prostitutes, gang members and number runners to the abusive parents, drug addicts and other degenerates that he is forced to be around. At a very early age Claude is introduced to a lifestyle that would rattle the cages of most adults. By the time he is a teen he has already been to jail several times and he is a hardened criminal who has done hardcore drugs and experienced things that would forever scar his troubled childhood.Yet, despite all of his problems he somehow rises above it all and manages to change his life around. He moves out of the ghetto and even gets a college degree. His story will make you want to truly congratulate this man's ability to overcome.I believe the book is a must read for teen-agers especially of any ethnicity, background or culture. It is a story that we can all relate to and perhaps understand what some of the problems facing our youth today really are and perhaps by reading about Mr. Brown's experiences, someone will decide that they too can overcome diversity despite all odds.
