City of Shadows is an exciting and expressive book by the popular novelist Celia Rees, who always tackles her subject with serious and sensitive composure. The novel was first published in 1998 by Hodder Children's Books.

City of Shadows is a book which details the account of four children and their thrilling adventure through the City of the Dead. It is about an ancient city with a past which lies behind the present and ghosts which shadow and preoccupy the living.

Davey, Kate and his twin cousins mysteriously travel from their world to the City of Shadows on Midsummer's Eve, which is a time of powerful and potent magic - when the barriers between the worlds grow thin.

The narrative begins on in the midsummer of his twelfth birthday, Davey, his twin cousins and his sister Kate; embark on a mysterious tour of the infamous underground city in Davey's hometown. As the tour progresses, Davey find himself separated from the others, and inside an eerie chamber. Here he is drawn to a large and hazy glassed mirror.

In a moment, Davey's reflection blurs and he finds himself back on the streets of the ancient city - however, the residents are not of his time (they are ghosts and some do not take kindly to those from the 'other side').

Davey also encounters friendlier ghosts who coerce him to return back to his world and time before the other malevolent ghosts discover that he is there, which meant Davey had to go on a hysterical search for his own world. This alternatively draws him into a circle of mystery and bitter feuds.

The book is told in third person and is a brilliant, frightening and convincing tale of courage and resilience which makes City of Shadows encouraging and a commendable and exemplary story.

It is an appealing novel with ideal characters that can be easily related with and the plot keeps the reader engaged to the storyline. As the book is read, you can form an association with the characters and see a profoundly emotional story full of valour, magic, adventure and companionship.

Overall, this is a much-admired novel by a critically acclaimed author. It is definitely a sharp and unique piece of literature that combines together a sense of history with an extraordinarily powerful and thrilling story that is unforgettable and highly recommended for most ages.
