Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery is a story about the ?bends in the road? in the life of a small orphan girl full of life ,fire, and an overactive imagination, named Anne. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables,Avonlea are elderly siblings who wish to adopt a little boy from an orphan asylum, a smart, likely boy of about ten or eleven --old enough to be of some use in doing chores right off and young enough to be trained up proper. They mean to give him a good home and schooling. But fate has something else in store for the Cuthberts. At the railway station Matthew finds an extraordinary girl of eleven instead of the expected boy. Matthew , a shy, unassuming person is drawn to her and takes her home to Green Gables. The imagination, antics and the very uniqueness of Anne slowly endear her to her new family. Anne starts her life at Green Gables an unwanted mistake but soon she is so deeply loved by Marilla and Matthew that she becomes their pride,support and future to them ? a much loved daughter. Anne goes from being an orphan without a home or kin to being ?Anne of Green Gables?.
This endearing and beautiful story of Anne takes the readers into a child?s imagination , trials and tribulations, outlook and life. Anne is in every way an unusual girl, she experiences grief, lack, hardship and sorrows in the short life- eleven years- before coming to Green Gables. Even then she does not lose her liveliness, zest for life nor her vivid imagination. Here she finds a home and an love. Here she gets her much longed for family. She makes them proud of her by her intelligence, hardwork, dedication, love and loyalty. She blossoms at Green Gables in a young woman any parent , teacher and friend would be proud to be associated with.
Dear old world,.....you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you. This , I feel, is what symbolises Anne of Green Gables. She takes whatever life throws at her with open arms and is ready for more, curious to see what lies beyond the bend in the road.
