One of the most beloved of Jane Austen?s novels is Pride and Prejudice. You enter the world of nineteenth century English country living in the remote village in Hertfordshire and the class system of the time.
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five daughters whom they must see marry well. Life is quiet in the country until Mr. Bingley, a single man of great fortune, moves in to the neighborhood at Netherfield.
The two eldest of the Bennet sisters are Jane and Elizabeth, the most sensible of the five sisters. Mrs. Bennet is sure one of them would do for a wife for the new neighbor.
Mr. Bingley has a large party that has joined him at Netherfield, Mr. Darcy being one of them. He is much richer then Mr. Bingley. He finds country society far beneath him. Mr. Darcy is found to be proud and disagreeable by the people of the Village.
Mr. Bingley is held in high esteem by all who meet him. Jane finds him most agreeable. The rest of the Bingley party finds the society in the country confining.
Elizabeth has a playful disposition and delights in the ridiculous. She found Mr. Darcy?s attitude towards her society just that, ridiculous. She could never find favor in Mr. Darcy.
Mr. Bingley found country society was attentive with no formality and stiffness: this pleases him.
After more interaction with country society Mr. Darcy finds that he would like to get to know Miss Elizabeth Bennet more. Miss Bennet on the other hand does not desire his good opinion.
Elizabeth becomes acquainted with George Wickham, an officer in the army. She learns that Wickham is the son of the late Mr. Darcy?s steward.
Mr. Wickham takes great pleasure in telling Elizabeth tales of the malicious treatment he received from Darcy after the death of Darcy?s Father.
Mr. Darcy asks Elizabeth to marry him. She declines and accuses him of being the worst of men because of what Mr. Wickham told her. In a letter Mr. Darcy tells Elizabeth his dealings with Mr. Wickham, Elizabeth is left to only one conclusion. Mr. Wickham has only the appearance of being a good man. She is left to humble herself and acknowledge that Mr. Darcy improves on acquaintance.
Mr. Wickham?s true character comes to light when he elopes with Elizabeth?s younger sister Lydia.
The Bennet family must partake in the disgrace and humiliation of Lydia?s foolish act. Elizabeth loves Darcy, but she was sure he would see to it that none of the Bennet sisters ever marry well.
Mr. Darcy swallows his pride and comes to the rescue. He found it his duty to remedy the situation and bring about the marriage of Wickham and Lydia. He makes certain that the Bennet family will not be disgraced by the actions of Mr. Wickham.
Elizabeth is soon made aware of the kindness of Mr. Darcy but is told to keep it a secret. Her love for Mr. Darcy grows even stronger as she learns of his sterling character.
Mr. Bingley comes and asks for Jane?s hand in marriage, making Jane a very happy women, she loved Mr. Bingley very much, She knew this would also bring respectability to her family.
Mr. Darcy then asks Elizabeth to marry him again, telling her of his love for her. This time she is inclined to accept.
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet now have three daughters married and two have married very well.
