What Went Wrong? ...and Continues
(Kiran Bedi)

Publicidade
India, like in any other developing country, has most despicable domestic violence, especially against women and the voiceless poor. Kiren Bedi, the first woman to have joined the leadership ranks of Indian Police Service and a recipient of Ramon Magsaysay award, tells the real story of these unfortunate victims of violence of every kind. These people has nothing to declare but their wrong past. The author brings together volunteers to confess their past. Consequently, this book is a first person narrative of what really went wrong in the lives of the victims. The book contains confessions of drug-addicts, prostitutes, child-brides, alcoholics, child-labourers, deserted wives etc. We have in the book a cross section of people of every age - adoloscents, men, women and even children- seventy-two of them. Each of these confessions tell the squalor of the victims and takes the reader to the world of the victims. Often lives of these are unreported and they suffer the injustice in the darkness of their homes or social situations. Often justice is denied to them, until a voluntary organisation or other comes into their lives. To get an idea of the book I shall highlight one of the confessions. Rani, 16-year old tells the tale of her being raped. She worked in a factory. Her friend's brother befriended her. Once she was intoxicated and raped her. To avoid stigma she started to live with him. Eventually, she was forced to sleep with the friends of the husband. She was forced to go to a counsellor and eventually she comes out of the noose. This book, an update of the unique collection of uncensored narrations born out of respect and mutual understanding, provides readers a close insight into live they may otherwise ignore, be unaware of, and/or have no access to. It places these realities in black and white for greater appreciation by all those who can play a role in prevention of such happenings and defines the duties to do and responsibilities to accept.
