Ecclesiastes is a book written by a teacher, or atleast that is what the name means. However, Ecclesiastes can hardly bedefined as just a collection of teachings from a wise author. it is oneof the most controversial books in the Bible. There is a roomer that itwas questionable whether or not the book should be included into theCanon. But because of its weight and respect for it in the Jewishbiblical tradition it was. After all, if this is the book full ofteachings, which is what the other books in the Bible are full of, whyall the noise around it? You see, surprisingly, Ecclesiastes is notjust a collection of teachings. It is also a book of lament. And notjust a lament about a specific terrible event or events in Israel, likethe book of Lamentations. No, Ecclesiastes is a lament about lifeitself. In modern nomenclature we would say that the author, who isbelieved to be Solomon, was deeply depressed. Depressed? You meansomeone who wrote a book in the Bible was depressed? Pretty much. Yousee the good thing about the Bible is that it is an honest, realisticbook. It is a book that describes a perfect loving Almighty God. Butour God is so loving that He is not going to torture us and publish abook about perfect people in the perfect world. After all He is the Godof truth. And every one of us knows that the onlytruth about this worldis imperfection, sin, mistakes, difficulties, and, yes, often evendepression. So here you go. Solomon was truthful about not beinghappywith this world and living in it. So the Lord in His graciousnessallowed him to write a pretty depressed book and put it in the Bible.However, there is also good news. You see, despite being depressedEcclesiastes was also a very wise man. That is why containing thelament about life, the book also contains some of the most wise sayingsand conclusions about life in the Bible. You see Proverbs containssayings of wisdom about specific things or eventsin life. ButEcclesiastes brings to the table sayings of supreme wisdom about lifein general; wisdom about life itself. That to me is quite amazing. Plusthe sayings themselves are so amazing that they became some of the mostknown and popular biblical quotations even in the secular world.
