A Change Of World

EDUCATION AND QUALITY OF LIFE

When asked, small children will usually be able to tell you with absolute conviction what they want to be when they grow up: a teacher or a ballet dancer or a lawyer or a rock star. But for a child, having a job and being ?grown up? is a hazy concept- something that happens in the far, far future. School, on the other hand, is a concrete and ever-present reality on which the child?s entire lifestyle is centered. His/Her day- to- day schedule consists of before school, School and after school. When one school year ends, another will soon follow it and another and so on. A graduation is not really an ending at all, but a segue way into more school. After kindergarten comes grade school, after grade school comes high school, and after high school comes college.
But then what comes after college? What does the former child do when faced with the possibility that the school cycle has ended, and it?s time to be a grown-up? A college student usually finds that answering ?what are you going to do after graduation? Is much tougher than what do you want to be when you grow up?? was for the preschool student.
Everybody encountered this situation after college. You feel the initial thrill at being completely free from school obligations for the first time in years. And with our immediate future no longer mapped around classes, it seemed like you could do anything. The future was wide open. But beyond the excitement was apprehension. Would you actually be able to find work that was good at? Are you really prepared to go out into the ?real world??
With the economy being the way it is nowadays, career aspirations can be difficult to follow. Many people end up putting their ambitions on holds, and taking jobs they don?t particularly care for. And they end up staying in those jobs indeterminately because they don?t know if they?d be able to find anything else if they quit.
Though you?d never realized it at the time, things are much simpler when you?re a young child. The present is pretty much set for you- school, and more school after that- but the distant future is unwritten like a big white piece of paper, and you have crayons. You can be anything you want when you grow up.
As it turns out, my future involves more school. I am now studying for a Masters Degree in Educational Management. Things have changed quite a bit since I was five years old and wanted to grow up to be a nurse. But I?m still young and intent on pursuing dreams; and I figure that to that end, some more study couldn?t hurt. Whether you?ve graduated or not, there?s never a time to stop learning, or to give up on your aspiration.
