This is the story of a girl Hannah Parmaleewho is poor but brave , intelligent and logical. She believes that conflicts are always useless.
She made her living as a servent in Waterloo where she met Philip, the son of her land lady. She always loved Philip deeply and abide to his thoughts and beliefs. He was against any fights of any kind for anything and always said that "any sort of conflict was unprofitable" . He never talked about the evils of fighting but the uselessness of it. This is the main idea of the story. Philip and due to him Hannah believed that if you have to back your opinions  with a club that means they are not good enough to stand on their own merit. Philip was ill and died of his illness soon but Hannah always carried his opinions throughout her life. Later she married Thomas and very soon parted with him. She had a son Peter whom she could not bring up being poor and single so she let Mrs. Edmunds adopt him and never told him that she is his mother , though she used to meet him occasionally as his aunt. She began to work as maid in Mrs. Ward''s house and very soon changed their lives with hte help of Philip''s ideas. The re entry of her ex husband Thomas in her life and the problems due to this have been portrayed beautifully by the writer. The behaviour of Peter the son after he gets to know everything and how maturely he handles the situation has been very thouhtfully written. The climax of the story is very different but comes as a pleasant surprise.
In a line "The heart winning story of a woman who lived an ordinary life in an extra ordinary way"
