The Rape Of Nanking
(Iris Chang)

Publicidade
At the beginning of her book, Iris Chang first tells the history of the Japanese and their reasons for invading China in the first place. In 1853 the Japanese, were forced into westernization, when Matthew Perry stormed in Japan and forced them to sign treaties and open their doors to trading. This sprang the Japanese forward and soon they had become imperialistic, attacking other Asian countries and forcing them into submission. In the 1930?s Japan attacked China, and in 1937 declared war, after withdrawing from the League of Nations. Japan believed they would be able to conquer all of China in three months, so when a single battle in Shanghai dragged on from summer to winter, Japan was looking for revenge and took it out at the next city Nanking.
When Nanking fell to the Japanese on December 13, 1937, the six weeks of terror began. Iris Chang writes about an order to ?KILL ALL CAPTIVES? and that?s just what began but in a horrible, atrocious way. She describes how thousands of men were led away, and sent to a firing squad, were beheaded, used as bayonet practice, burned, and killed by other means of torture. The women too were tortured and killed but not before being raped. Between 20,000 and 80,000 women were raped in Nanking during the massacre, hence giving this event its name of the rape of Nanking. When the Japanese were finally done ransacking the city of Nanking, an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 civilians had been brutally murdered.
