"Toot... toot.."

"Rat - a- tat-a-tat"

As he heard the sound of the pipes and the beats of
the drums Bimbo the elephant started moving slowly
towards the Circus Ring. Seeing him approaching from
behind the tent, waving his ears in rhythm with the
drumbeats, spectators of the circus cheered in unison.
"Wow! Here comes Bimbo. Bimbo the elephant is coming,
look!," children who already have seen him before
shouted. But, even on hearing these cheerful voices,
Bimbo was not interested. He has been listening to
these shouting long enough. However, on reaching the
centre of the Ring The rose on his hind legs and
raised his trunk in salutation to everybody. Soon the
orchestra started playing with increased vigour. Bimbo
danced to the tune. After a short while, the volume of
the music gradually came down.

The silence lasted only for a few seconds. There came
the "bang-bang" of another drum. The sound was nearing
the ring from the other side of the tent. All the
spectators turned to that side. Soon the entire public
broke into a hearty laghter. A monkey dressed like a
clown was playing a drum and walking towards Bimbo.
The way he walked and swayed as he came forward was so
funny that even a serious person would have laughed on
seeing him. It was such a funny scene! Every time he
beat the drum, the conical hat on his head jumped up a
little!

A rabbit was walking just behind the monkey. Both came
close to Bimbo. The monkey comically saluted Bimbo,
raising another ripple of laughter. After finishing
the greetings the monkey resumed his drumming "Bang!
Bang! Boom! Boom"

Like a flash, the rabbit jumped up and climbed on the
back of Bimbo. He acted like a mahout and presented a
series of action to suit. Bimbo was standing still all

the while. Then the rabbit jumped down to the curled
tip of Bimbo?s trunk.

Meanwhile the monkey stopped drumming. He went to a
huge tricycle lying in one corner of the tent and
pushed it to the centre of the ring. All music stopped
abruptly and through the mike announcement boomed.

"Ladies and gentlemen, with the next two items by
Bimbo the Jumbo, our show in your town comes to an
end".

While the announcement was going on, Bimbo lowered his
trunk gently

and let the rabbit onto the ground. Bimbo cautiously
climbed on the tricycle and pedadlled round the ring
once. Then he got down from the tricycle and waited.

The next item to be performed by him was to stand on
one leg. One of the ringboys brought a large stool and
placed it in the middle of the ring.

Bimbo was feeling extremely tired. This was the fourth
show of the day. He was sure that he would collapse if
he tried the trick. All he got to eat during the
entire day was a handful of hay. That too before the
first show. He was feeling terribly hungry. He was not
sure to get enough to eat today even after the show.
From past experience he knew that they would not care
to feed the animals properly till they set up the show
in another town, maybe after several days. "No, I
can?t stand on one leg" he thought and did not move.

He was not even ready to raise his trunk and salute
the spectators. He was feeling terribly miserable.
Meanwhile a fat man, who was known as "the Fatso"
among the members of the circus, came near Bimbo. He
had a very long stick with copper cappings in his
hand. Bimbo felt a shudder when he saw the stick. The
Fatso looked angrily at Bimbo and shouted,"Why are you
hesitating?...Hum!? Bimbo understood his words, but
pretended as if he did not hear. The Fatso glared at
Bimbo and swirled the stick like that, since even the

Fatso the lion also became as tame as a dog and<br /\>obeyed. Everyday knew that the Fatso was the most<br /\>cruel person in the Circus. He did not tolerate even<br /\>the slightest disobedience, and did not hesitate to<br /\>beat. Even though he knew all these, Bimbo did not<br /\>move. The monkey looked at Bimbo and the Fatso<br /\>alternately with horror in his eyes. Bimbo felt that<br /\>he was advising, "Bimbo why do you want to be beaten<br /\>by the Fatso? Stop your mischief and obey him."<br /\><br /\>But Bimbo did not bother to move. He stood still,<br /\>facing the spectators. "Slap, slap" the stick rose<br /\>twice in the hands of the Fatso and fell heavily on<br /\>the Bimbo?s back. Again the Fatso looked angrily at<br /\>Bimbo and swirled the stick. He shouted, "You brute, I<br /\>will teach you a lesson for your disobedience. You<br /\>were doing the tricks even in the last show!..." Bimbo<br /\>received two more blows. He was shocked when he<br /\>received the first blow, but now he did not bother.<br /\>"Let him beat! Let him thrash me till he gets tired<br /\>himself! Then he will stop. I am not going to salute<br /\>anybody, anymore. This is the fourth show today! The<br /\>cruel brutes!," Bimbo thought. All the while the<br /\>monkey was observing him sympathetically.<br /\><br /\>When the Fatso resumed the thrashing, the spectators<br /\>
