Book: India--what it can teach us?
Author: Friedrich Max Müller
Publisher's Name: Penguin Books India
Review:

The Book is written by the great orientalist, who though never visited India, but was the one of the greatest prime supporter of its culture, heritage, and the values that it impart in almost all spheres of life.

The book basically is in form of lectures that Max Müller had to deliver to the candidates who had been selected by the British government for ICS. The main intention behind the lectures was to give some experience and picture about the culture and nature of Indians, before those candidates would have set their feet on Indian soil.

It is not strange to note the beautiful picture that Max Müller provides in every lectures, which deal with different aspects of life in India. Due to his own scholorship, he was able to provide some clear facts on some debateable issues that were prominent in those times; the value of Sanskrit being the one!

There are seven lectures in total that were delivered by Max Müller , however due to classical style of English language, the reader might find it bit difficult to understand. An average reader would find it very difficuly; however, a person who enjoy classic and have read some books about orientalism, he/she would like the book. The book is indeed engrossing, and if you are comfortable with old style English writing with paragraph-like sentences that have less puctuation marks, then this book would be a real treasure for you.

The book is a rare gem, as it peeps into Vedic times and gives such clear facts that even people living in India, and who are unaware about the glory of their own nation, would be delighted to read it. When i first read it, i enjoyed it a lot, as the book emphasize a lot about the value of Sanskrit and its contribution to the evolvement of Indian culture. It should be read by everybody who likes to know about India and is interested in oriental studies.
