Desert Queen
(Janet Wallach)

Publicidade
This is a fascinating biography of the Victorian Englishwoman - explorer, cartographer, writer, diplomat and intelligence agent who created the post World War I country of Iraq.
Encouraged by an aristocratic father, Gertrude Bell set off for Mesopotamia at an early age and became the woman the Arabs knew as the desert queen. As the British Oriental secretary, she was given the job of drawing the borders for the new Iraq while attempting to bring together its disparate leaders. Gertrude was also responsible for founding the museum of antiquities in Baghdad. Along the way there were tragic love affairs, sickness, and
unending exciting events. Her life story would make a great movie.
