Publicidade
The study intended to determine the enrolment and the transition rate of students from Junior Secondary School (JSS) to the Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) of Edo State within the period 1992 to 1998. It was also meant to determine whether there is gender gap in the enrolment in the schools. To achieve the purposes, four research questions, which include the following, were raised:
-                     What were the students? transition rates from JSS to SSS in Edo State?
-                     What were the male transition rates from JSS to SSS over the years of study?
-                     What were the female transition rates from JSS to SSS over the years under study?
-                     What were the yearly percentage enrolments differences between male and female in Edo State?
All the 347 public secondary schools in the state constituted the population on which the study was based.  There was therefore no sampling.  Instrument used for the study was the enrolment record that was obtained from the Ministry of Education in Edo State.
The researcher collected data personally.  The Ministry of Education was contacted personally for the release of the Data.  Data were analyzed using percentages.
It was revealed from the study that:
-                     Gender gap existed in the Edo State educational system.
-                     The transition rate of males from JSS to SSS was lesser than that of females.
-                     There was difference in the rate of transition from Junior to Senior Secondary Schools on Edo State with average transition rate of 63 percent within the years under study.
Based on these findings, measures such as the making of education to be more meaningful in terms of skill acquisition and knowledge towards personal and economic development, improvement in the level of facilities and infrastructures in schools; introduction of policies, which will compel students to remain in school till they complete their secondary education, are recommended.
