Architecture In North America (since 1960)
Architecture in north america since 1960 is the first volume of its kind to trace the evolution of north america architectural work over the last thirty-five years. Its developments and innovations are explored through themes of ideology, place, social change, technologi, the city and the environment; and in an involved yet far-reaching introduction and seventy-eight project, it both examines and offers new critical insight into the debates surrounding architecture today. The building disussed here are selected for their strong identity, their uniqueness, and for the paradigmatic role they have played in the development of north american architecture, however subtle or controversial these roles might be. Their diversity reflects the multi faceted explorations of the periode : technological, iconological, social, and cultural. Corporated headquarters share pages with subsidized housing , baseball stadia and televangelist glass cathedral, along with an intensive care unit for young cancer patient and library for the blind and handicapped. The work same of today''s most important and dynamic architects can be seen here in project of varyng scope and size, ranging from edward larrabee barnes''s modest wood frame Haystack Mountain School of Art and Craft , perched on platforms above the maine coast , to myron goldsmith''s solar telescope facility at kitt peak, arizona; from the serene, monumental work of louis kahn''s Salk Institute to the gigantic technological complexes of Helmut jahn ; and canonical work such as Saarinen''s Dulles Airport Terminal, Robert venturi''s Vanna Venturi House and Marcel Breuer''s Whitney Museum. Current experiments by peter eisenman and Frank gehry are explored here , as are MLTW''s Pasific Coast Sea Ranch Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Work by architects of a youngers generation ? among them Carlos Jimenez, Eric owen moss, Holt, Hinshaw, also play a very important role. The last project is the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center , a work of major significace in the way architecture, advance information technology and nature are integrated. The project are ilustrated with photographs, drawing, site diagrams, and construction details, and discussed incisively in the short critical essays that accompany them . project data, architects'' biographies and bibliographical references are presented in a documentation section. The product of extensive research and close collaboration with the architects themselves, this is a thoroughly comprehensive and wide-ranging study, a major contribution to an exciting period of american architectural history.
