If Looks Could Kill
(KATE WHITE)
Bailey Weggins is a contributing writer for Gloss, one of the nation''s hottest woman''s magazines. The thirty-three year-old divides her time between true crime writing and post-divorce dating. While in the middle of her latest fling, Bailey receives a frantic call from Cat Jones asking for her help in a suspicious matter. Reluctantly ending her date, Bailey heads off to the townhouse of her high-maintenance boss. Upon arrival, Bailey expects to come across a catering fiasco or decorating disaster. What she actually stumbles upon is shocking: the dead body of Heidi, the family nanny. Bailey''s discovery puts her right in the center of the investigation. The police have their job, but Cat asks Bailey to do a little sleuthing on her own. Heidi appears to have been poisoned by laced chocolates from a gift Cat received as a party host. Could someone want to kill the high-powered leader of Gloss magazine? If Looks Could Kill follows Bailey in her search for answers. Cat stepped in a lot of toes in her drive to reach the top, leaving plenty of disgruntled colleagues with viable motives in her wake. Bailey must tread carefully or her search for answers will lead to her own untimely demise. This is an amusing mystery that''s most appreciated by those who read for fun. Literary purists need not apply. Bailey''s passion for fashion amidst the trendy magazine industry provides an amusing backdrop to this entertaining tale. Author Kate White is best known as Cosmopolitan''s editor in chief. Her day job may pay the bills, but White proves she could make it as a fiction writer as well. Bailey is a likable gal who mingles in elite circles while maintaining a level head. Cat is a little ambiguous as the victim/boss, but her erratic behavior adds to the mystery. Several entertaining minor characters provide plenty of unusual and amusing antics while widening the net of suspicion. In a welcome gift from the publicity gods, If Looks Could Kill is the inaugural selection of Kelly Ripa''s Reading with Ripa club, which features fiction that''s fun, frivolous and fast. This tale meets all the qualifications while providing great fashion tips to boot. I thoroughly enjoyed If Looks Could Kill. Greed and glamour combined with ample suspense keep the pages turning. You''ll be guessing whodunit until the very end, while the final sentence will put a smile on your face. Now I ask you, isn''t that what a good mystery is all about?
