Jews In Bircza
(nm)

Publicidade
Jews lived in Bircza during the middle of the 16th century. As the years progressed, every other inhabitant of the town was of the Moses confession. The town's register from 1921 recorded 1038 Jews, which constituted about 54% of the general population of Bircza. The Jewish cemetery is situated near the main road on the right side of the Catholic cemetery. The necropolis was ruined and desecrated during World War 11. Many of the tomb stones (matzevot) were used by the Germans for constructing the bridge over the San river . The original fence is partly preserved. The area, which is approximately one hectare is covered with wild shrubs and very dense weeds and grass. There may be more lost beneath the green wilderness waiting to be discovered. The inscriptions and illustrations on some of the matzevot are already illegible, because they were made from soft sandstone. A portion of the cemetery is surrounded by a little stream. As one of the inhabitants said, the stream saps the area and probably washes out the bones from the cemetery. The caretaker of this cemetery died a couple of years ago. Since then, the cemetery has lasped into obscurity.
