The Simple Things In Life
(Julie Gehl)

Publicidade
Why is it that so many of us take the simple things in life for-granted? Is it because we are all so obsessed with money and nice things that we fail to appreciate the little things? Too often, we refuse to acknowledge one another and let people fend for themselves when it is clear that they could use our help. Still, we sit back and think about helping them and by the time we realize that they need us and we start to get up from our seat, they are gone and don?t need us anymore. Aren?t people constantly looking for purpose? Yet, we are so self-involved (myself included), that we can?t see what is right in front of us.One day, at work, before my shift had started, an elderly lady was standing in front of the bathroom doors, hesitant to go in when I walked by. Her son, who was standing with her asked me as I passed, ?are you going in there miss,? as he pointed to the ladies washroom. ?No? I said, turning and walking away. As I started walking away I heard the man say ?don?t worry mom, I?ll find someone to help you.? Oh my God, how rude of me to just ignore this little old lady?s cry for help. I turned back and she was standing alone, I said ?I?ll help you mam.? She held on to my arm and her grip was tighter than I had expected it would be for such a sweet old woman. Her son, who was a few steps away turned back, as he was probing the crowd to find help for his mother, and said ?thank-you.? I smiled and continued into the washroom with my new little friend.?I just need to use the washroom? she informed me.?Ok? I replied, wondering why I was needed.?I got locked in one of these things one time and you have no idea how terrifying that can be.? No, I thought to myself, I don?t know how that would feel. Being left alone in a bathroom stall waiting and hoping for someone to come in so I could call out for help was never something that had ever occurred to me as something I might fear. I would just crawl underneath the door, but for an elderly woman who needed help walking, this was not an option. ?Oh my goodness,? I said, ?that would be scary.?Pointing to the lock on the door she said, ?How does this work.??You just go inside the bathroom there are turn the handle.? My little friend stood there testing the lock several times and finally said, ?would you mind just standing outside and waiting for me?? ?No problem, I can hold the door closed for you if you?d like.??That would be great, thank-you so much, I am just so scared to go in there alone and risk not being able to get out.??That?s ok, I understand? but I didn?t, not really, I had no clue how it felt to be locked in the bathroom alone with no one to help me. ?I will hold the door closed and you can tell me when you need me to let you out??Thank-you so much,? she said as she reluctantly ventured into the stall. I waited for a minute or two when through the door I heard a little voice say: ?I think I am ready to come out now.?I started to open the door hoping that my little friend was not in the midst of pulling up her skirt. She came out and was so grateful that I had helped her. I don?t mean the kind of thanks we give our hairdressers for giving us a ?Rachel? haircut but the kind of thanks we would give our doctors for saving our lives. She couldn?t stop thanking me and it made me feel good to help someone who was in need of assistance. Just then, I was remembering when I was back in the classroom of my favorite professor hearing him talk about whether or not we could do selfless good deeds. Could we? Yes, if you are doing it because you honestly think that you are helping someone because they need it, not if you are doing it because ?it is the right thing to do,? or ?because it makes you feel good.? As I look back at what I have wrote, (again at work before my shift), an old woman drops her cane and sighs (probably thinking that it will take her longer to pick it up than it would to walk to wal-mart and buy a new one). Without thinking twice a young man leans forward and picks it up for her. I do not think he realizes her appreciation for what he has just done as he walks off and tells her ?no problem? to her ?thank-you so much young man? remark. We could all learn a little something from our elders if we would just take the time to listen. So, the next time you see a little old lady (or man for that matter), struggling with groceries, or trying to cross the street where there clearly is no pedestrian sign, help her, and not because you should?because you honestly believe that she needs you.
