Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
In Jane Austen?s most popular novel, Pride and Prejudice, we are shown a love story that would most definitely not be classified as love at first sight. The two main characters of the story are Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, better know simply as Mr. Darcy. Being that Mr. Darcy is very often perceived by others as a somewhat arrogant man, he very easily offends and irritates Elizabeth Bennet, who is a very intelligent, strong willed woman. A woman who's entire being portrays a desire for respect and consideration. This self assuredness is the very thing that attracts Darcy to her and at the same time becomes the obstacle that keeps them apart. That along with the fact that Darcy is indeed very prideful and aloof at times, which makes it very hard for those around him to see his true thoughts and feelings. Elizabeth's opinion of Mr. Darcy becomes tainted by prejudice when a third part by the name of George Wickham, better know throughout the story though simply as Wickham, enters the picture and gives Elizabeth a very distasteful picture of Mr. Darcy. While he himself seems to be the very kind of man that she has been hoping for.
Time, and continued association with both men begins to show Elizabeth different sides to the characters of both men. These revelations leads to her confusion and at times depression. It also begins to effect her family which is comprised of four other sisters, one older named Jane who is very close with Elizabeth and three younger, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. Mary being very shy and awkward and the younger to being very silly and at present obsessed with the many officers who have taken up residence in the nearby town of Meryton. Also adding comedy to the situation is Mr. Bennet's somewhat ridiculous cousin, Mr. Collins, who is to inherit the estate from Mr. Bennet upon his death. This lack of security is what spurs Mrs. Bennet to be constantly making a spectacle of herself while trying to marry off her daughters to any eligible man available.
There is also a love story going on between Jane, the oldest, prettiest and sweetest of the Bennet daughters and Mr. Bingley, Mr. Darcy's dearest friend who is responsible for bringing the two couples together in the beginning, when he decides to rent the estate of Netherfield, not far from the Bennet Family's home. Mr. Bingley is much like Jane in the fact that both are always ready and willing to see the best in others. They are both wholly lacking in the qualities of pride and prejudice that seem to be creating so many problems for Elizabeth and Darcy. Their love affair however is not at all a smooth one, doing to outside forces that are bent on keeping them apart.
Pride and Prejudice is also a story of learning to contend with the families? of the people we fall in love with. Mr. Darcy can't help being put off by Elizabeth?s silly and indiscreet mother and younger sisters. While Elizabeth has to stand her ground and go head to head with Darcy's condescending and arrogant Aunt, Lady Catherine.
Following along though as these rich and interesting characters find themselves and there places in life and with each other is a truly rewarding experience, one the reader will surely not regret.
