Frances Hodgson Burnett is one of the most fantastic writers that I have ever read. Her interpretation of the importance of childhood relationships with distinction in secrecy is outstanding. The book moves from the control over the entire secretive house with it's closed doors and closed gardens, by the adults in the story, to the control of thesecret garden and well-beingof the main characters, by the children. The characters in this story are absolutely amazing in portraying howpowerful children can be in forcing adults to find themselves. Colin's father is devasted at losing his wife to a fatal accident. She fell,whileshe was in the garden,forcing her into premature laborwhich left her son and husband mourning her death and unable to communicate with one another. Then Mary comes along. A young girl who herself was also a secret that no one was fully aware of. Her mother was ashamed of her and never talked about her to anyone. Therefore, no one was aware that she even existed. Mary meets her cousin, Colin and after doing so, puts him in his place. He is convinced that he is dying but in actuality, he just has not been given the chance to funtion as a normal little boy. Mary teaches him that there is more to life than being scared, and sick. He lets her take control and confides in him about the secret garden. They grow together, healing one another and in response to this, Colin's father is also healed by Colins vast improvement in his health. Once, a small, lightweight, pasty-faced young boy with attitute, Colin transforms into a loving, healthy, boy who is capable of creating longlasting, trusting relationships with others. Mary, in a sense, is the garden. She transforms herself, Colin, and Mr. Craven (Colin's father) into different people who are now capable of understanding one another and finding love both within themselves and each other.
