Living for Godot Written by: Jennifer Lynn KnoxTwo homeless men are waiting on Godot, yet Godot is never fully defined. Meanwhile, this tale spins as there is humorous banter between Gogo and Didi, absurd declarations of Pozo (a man traveling by), and the profound, fragmented preaching of Lucky (the traveling man's servant) all combine to ask the ultimate questions: What are they waiting for? And how exactly should they go about waiting? A day passes. Godot does not come, but hunger does. The two talk of food comicly and decide to Wait around anyway. They wait another day and continue to do so until the end; even after there is a realization that Godot will never come. After all, regardless of who Mr. Godot is, or whether he comes, the idea of him provides some meaning to the two men?s lives fueling them with the purpose to stay exactly where they are. Mr. Godot could be interpreted as someone concrete, such as an employer, or something as abstract as the meaning of life. It really matters little to the actual play and the message therein. The story takes place during the wait, and therefore only tackles (head on) the restlessness people feel while waiting. Our lives revolve around waiting. In society people wait for so much: to get to the front of the line, for lunch, to turn eighteen to vote and twenty one to drink; we wait for our bruises to heal, our hard work to be recognized, and our diets to payoff. And when our desires are filled, we become desperate to find another line to get in.These times of waiting are the times we question the way things work. The same questions that we can never really answer are the same ones we continue to ask:Why are we here? What?s the purpose? Why do we come into the world only to die? And finally, while we wait for answers, what should we do? Well,Didi and Gogo do quite a bit. Although nothing really happens plot-wise throughout the play, we watch the two spirited men as they are seen reflecting upon life, and in the meantime: singing, arguing, observing, acting, reflecting, playing, dancing, eating, complaining, joking, exercising, and growing older, and all the while, waiting for Godot. The only thing they do not do is work. Other than that, all of what they do, are things most people do in to pass the time in their own lives.Maybe there is truth to the theory that life?s very essence can be found within the waiting. life is waiting, after all. Consequently, we should make the most of the details. We must embrace uncertainty and accept it. All the while, we should argue with vigor, swim in our happiness, observe critically, sing loudly, and grow older with dignity. After all, when you add it all up, life?s wait can be passed with action or inaction, and that ultimately for us to decide.
