Finding God In Unexpected Places
(Philip Yancey)

Publicidade
I remember a history class back in my school days. The teacher was talking about the Stone Age, about how it ?started? 2 million years ago. I didn?t know anything about the Biblical dates back then, but I remember asking the question: ?What does the Bible say about this? Where was God?? I also remember the impression I received that the question was silly and unnecessary. Since then, I regret to say, I have always hesitated to ask questions. The question was silly, because now I realise that a Stone Age 2 million years ago is a stupid myth. Now with the little knowledge that I have acquired up my sleeves, I learn that Christianity views history not just as a study of toothpicks made out of stones, or of the rise and fall of nations and dictators, but as the story of God dealing with this sinful image-bearer called humans. Someone rightly said ?history is His-story? (God?s story). No matter how dark or unpromising an era in history is, you always find the hand of God somewhere graciously guiding: sometimes gentle, sometimes harsh, but always there. In his book Finding God in Unexpected Places, Phillip Yancey, the foremost Christian journalist and writer takes us through some major events in contemporary history and points us poignantly to God. He explains, ?The job of a journalist is, simply, to see?. And he has seen traces of God in the most unexpected places: the door of a prostitute, behind bars in a maximum security prison, in the mind of an atheist, in the collapse of Russia and the Berlin Wall, in the plays of Shakespeare, in the desperate cries of Communism and Marxism as their new breed of human beings (the new socialist man) grew older and increasingly sinful. If you have read some of Yancey?s books, you may find some repetition of ideas and observations. But that doesn?t make this book less interesting or effective. The good part of this book is that you don?t have to read it in continuity. Each chapter reads like a whole and separate article. Even if you don?t have the time (or patience) to read the whole book, I recommend you at least read chapter 36 The Church Behind Bars where he writes about his association with prison ministry.Today we live in a society of confused values, diverse answer, 1001 guides to living life and defying death, technological invasion even in this part of the world. We hear very less talk of God and no Godliness among ?Christians? (except on Sunday morning). We look at our economic, social and political mess and say, ?God wouldn?t want to be here, so why bring Him in?. Reading Yancey?s book I realised that God could be actually very, very near. He has a reputation of showing up in the most unexpected places. A desperate situation always has a crack somewhere to let hope shine in. Are we looking?
