Mika Waltari, a well known Finnish writer, published in 1945 a remarkable historical novel, his first and also the very known: The Egyptian. The action in this novel is placed in a fascinating period of Ancient Egypt, in Pharaoh Akhnaton's time, Pharaoh of the 18-th dynasty of Egypt's Pharaons. The main character of the novel, doctor Sinuhe, describes his own story from the exile followed soon after the Akhnaton's death. The name of the doctor is coming from an ancient Egyptian text, The Sinuhe's Story, and it is a custom of old standing 12-th dynasty of pharaons. There are other important characters in the novel: Kaptah, the Sinuhe's slave, the warrior Horemheb and Sinuhe's girl friends Nefernefernefer, Minea and Merit. The characters together with the action and the places where they are happening are described with a remarkable precision and give the feeling that you are living them. You are transposed in the Ancient Egypt in a period of instability of the society due to the remarkable changes. These changes came from the replacement of pharaons and from the fact that people are separated by religion. All these lead to a poorer Egypt, the former empire becomes a fragile target for the countries around. Besides the events in Egypt, the novel describes also the travels of Sinuhe through Babylon, Crete Minona, Hititi and other civilizations around. Sinuhe appears in this novel as baby floating by Niles in a basket found by a poor couple who decides to adopt him. From the very childhood Sinuhe learns different medical treatments from his adoptive father who was a medecin. When he grew up, Sinuhe went to the Pharaon's temple to study medecine but because of the fact that critics and suspicion were not accepted by him he decided to leave the temple and to continue his studies somewhere else. He finished by having travel many years through several countries in the neighbourhood of Egypt and reporting war informations and arms of these nations to Horemheb, an Egytianarmy commander and friend of himself. In the same time he is not stopping to gather medical experience from the nations' knowledge by exchanging the knowledge he had got in Egypt. Kaptah, his slave, is following his master in each of his travels until the point where Sinuhe released him.The big secret is that he was the elder brother of Akhnaton and in fact he had to be Pharaoh.After the fall of Akhnaton, Tutankamon will become Pharaoh and later, after his death, Heremheb will take his place by elections.The novel ends at the moment of Sinuhe's local arresting by Heremheb's order. He is forced to live a restrictive life on a lot nearby Nile.
